You know when you’ve prepared a great meal for your dog and when you set it down, he just stares right back at you like nothing’s happened? At Pets Paradise, we’ve encountered a good number of such dogs; the picky eaters.
There are a couple of reasons why your dog isn’t eating so well. We’ve made a list of a few known reasons and how to counteract them.
When your dog’s appetite has decreased to the point that he/she starts becoming skinny, it’s time you go see the vet. There could be a underlying issue like an infection, pain, liver problems, and kidney failure. Your vet will know exactly whats wrong.
2. Upset stomach
Another issue could be that your dog experiences an upset stomach or other symptoms during or after feeding him a particular meal. Find out what your dog is allergic to and try to change the diet. (Switch to a grain free formula or a different kind of protein)
Yes. Your dog’s emotional state may affect his/her eating habits. With this in mind, make sure to give your dog lots of love and attention. This can be done by initiating play time, cuddling or going for walks.
4. The little guy is used to another kind of food.
Some dogs do not like change; whether its its surroundings, a new owner or food. They won’t accept it. If you are a new dog owner, ask the previous owners what the dog is used to and if you have to change the diet, introduce the new stuff slowly-in small amounts till the dog gets used to it.
5. Behavior problems
Some dogs may stop eating because of behavior problems. These problems are not always caused by the dog who won’t eat. If you have another dog or pet in the home, your dog could be reacting to that pet. For instance, if your dog won’t eat, it could be due to another dog who is stealing his food or growling at him while he eats. Try feeding your dog in a separate room. Leaving the dog alone for a while may help.
